Dinesh Chetty: Driven to make a difference

With an entrepreneurial spirit, a head for numbers, and a desire to help people own their homes, Chatsworth-based Dinesh Chetty founded Durban Property Finance (DPF) in 2004. And what began as a solo venture has since become a dynamic and growing business that has helped thousands of South Africans realise their home ownership dreams and actively developed young talent within the industry.

DPF is also a MortgageMax Business Partner, and according to MortgageMax CEO Jors van Niekerk, it’s been a privilege to see the company grow from strength to strength. “We’re incredibly proud to have a long-standing association with an industry leader like Dinesh and to have Durban Property Finance as part of our family,” he says.

We recently caught up with Dinesh to learn more about DPF and the secrets to the team’s success.

Why are you passionate about what you do?

Having shelter is one of the most basic human needs. Helping people own their homes is a fulfilling and enriching path – it’s what drives me and the DPF team.

How has your business grown and changed over the years?

While I started out alone, over the past 20 years, the DPF footprint has expanded, the team has grown, technology has driven many of our innovations, and we’ve housed over 25 000 clients. Our team is diverse, and we actively employ women and young people under 30. We do this not only to develop future leaders in our industry but also to ensure that we contribute to women and youth empowerment in South Africa.

How have your clients and their needs changed over the years?

Nowadays, people want their needs met instantly, so business speed is critical. Customers are also very well informed – they are aware of the different options available in the market and expect to be offered a range of solutions tailored to their needs.

What do you love most about working in the industry?

I enjoy creating, building, and maintaining meaningful relationships in the industry at large, and I find it incredibly fulfilling to meet and engage with people from diverse backgrounds.

What is your greatest strength as a bond originator?

Our extensive product and process knowledge and strong negotiation skills are critical to DPF’s success.

What is the secret to outstanding client service?

While I can’t give away all our secrets, I will say that listening to your customers, understanding their wants and needs, providing constant feedback, and being honest and transparent are all keys to excellent client service.

What differentiates Durban Property Finance?

We consider our biggest competitor to be ourselves – we always strive to deliver the best version of ourselves.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

Undoubtedly, the late John Goldstone, who was the Regional Manager of MortgageMax KZN. He imparted invaluable knowledge to me (and to the industry), and his mentorship contributed greatly to DPF’s success. I’m eternally grateful to him.

What does success mean to you?

For me, success means several things: it’s seeing the people around me achieving the best results, maintaining healthy, long-term relationships, and helping my clients achieve their property needs.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career?

It’s been incredible to witness the growth of the DPF team, not only in quantity but also in quality.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in bond origination?

Stay true to yourself and continuously learn your product to benefit your clients and industry partners.
